I have always considered it an omen that my biathlon career started while I was on a foreign exchange in Norway as the Norwegians were preparing to host the 1994 Olympics. That year I stayed with my host parents, Kari and Bjorn Ostengen in Vingrom, which is a small town about 10 kilometers away from Lillehammer, so I got the full Olympic experience.

I have always been proud to be born and raised in Kasilof, which is a small town on the Kenai Peninsula, about 160 miles south of Anchorage. Apparently Kasilof has a little over 400 residents, but if someone would have asked me before I read that, I would have guessed much less since very few houses are visible from the road since all the houses are tucked into the woods.

One of the marvels of nature occurs each year in the summer when the salmon return to the lakes from which they were born after years of feeding in the ocean. How they find their way back is a mystery to me, but I do know this migration is very important to Alaskans and is significant part of our culture.
