Farewell Sven! - 19.09.2007

One of Germany’s legendary biathletes, Sven Fischer, retired after this past season. On September 15, he held a ‘Farewell Race’ in Oberhof, Germany during the German Biathlon Championships. I was invited to attend as well as many internationally known biathletes from around the world.
The stadium was near capacity, which showed how popular biathlon, and especially Sven are in Germany. It was an honor that my relay partner for the event was another biathlon legend, Frank Luck. The actual race was not as competitive as a normal World Cup, but a great tribute to a great athlete.
Sven seemed to have two mottos to live by: Family first, and never give up. He was also a good friend, even visiting Alaska and making me feel welcome whenever I came to Germany. I wish him the best in the future with his new career as a television commentator.
Toi, Toi, Toi!
