The summer has been passing by quickly, and all the ants, squirrels, and biathletes are busy preparing for winter.
I began the summer fishing in Bristol Bay, Alaska with my family. There were a lot of fish this year, and we spent many sleepless nights picking the fish out of the nets, so I expect everybody to eat wild Alaskan salmon, there is plenty to go around. After Bristol Bay, I returned home to Kasilof, where the training resumed in full force. I always enjoy training at home, because after fourteen years of competing in biathlon, I have turned Kasilof into my own personal Olympic Training Center, with ski trails and a shooting range included. The trails are mostly on a hill by my house which means lots of vertical training, which is the type of training I enjoy most. I also venture out from my home base for training. I do a lot of rollerskiing on Cohoe loop, which is a low traffic road by the ocean. I can also drive to the mountains for hiking, or to Tustumena lake and go rowing for hours. Being an athlete in Kasilof is fun, because it is such a beautiful place to be outside. When the training is done, I stumble home, shower, eat and rest preparing for my next training. There is little time to do anything else besides training at this time of year because the more preparation I do now, the better I will do in winter. Soon the fall camp schedule will begin with a training camp in Sweden, where the USBA coaches are from. The camp plan looks very Swedish, simply lots of work, so I better run up and down the hill here at home a few more times to prepare. Take care, Jay <- back |
